THØSS: GUILDFORD BOILEROOM 2016

Listen If You Like:

  • Punchy guitar with folk vocals

  • Having to explain how to spell an artist’s name every time you mention them

  • Visceral lyrics

  • The darker side of Ben Howard

When THØSS first appeared on Guildford Boileroom’s stage it was impossible not to notice his incredible height.

Standing at 6ft 6 inches tall, he was surprisingly unassuming as he quietly set up. The usual hum of the waiting crowd provided some kind of auditory invisibility.

My expectations were low. He seemed nervous, or at least a wallflower.

His long limbs and wide eyes mirrored a deer in headlights.

However, as soon as his fingers touched his guitar he transformed. His title track IWITW (I was in the Water) from his debut EP ‘Benchwarmer’ brought out a killer performance as he exposed his old soul.

He’s an uninhibited writer who speaks from his soul with lyrics are more visceral and honest than they are poetically profound.

This unapologetic openness gives you a peek through the keyhole of the childhood bedroom in which he wrote his song, performed with eyes closed.

THØSS’s punchy dropouts and catchy vocals have proved popular with IWITW reaching #4 on the Spotify Global Viral 50 Chart and #2 UK Viral 50 Chart. When watching him on stage, it is easy to melt into the near-perfect balance of vulnerability and capability that creates him as a performer.

THØSS is definitely one to keep an eye on as he takes on the DIY underground-indie scene with overnight potential. He supported bands Black Honey last month and will play with Flawes in the Sebright Arms in London on the 14th April.
